For years interproximal reduction has been used successfully in correction of mild anterior crowding, and is commonly prescribed when treating this type of anterior mal-alignment with Clear Image Aligners. The typical anterior crowding case can have 0.25 to 0.50mm of enamel removed from the mesial and distal of each anterior tooth.

Typical IPR

The typical anterior crowding case can have 0.25 to 0.50mm of enamel removed from the mesial and distal of each anterior tooth. If the prescribing doctor does not provide IPR details, Specialty Appliances will reduce enamel an even amount up to 0.50mm per contact, or 0.25mm per mesial and distal of each tooth involved in the reset.

Aggressive IPR - Incorporating Cuspids and Bicuspids

Some clinicians are more aggressive with the amount of tooth structure removed to correct crowding. Cuspids (mesial and distal) and the mesial of the first bicuspids typically have thicker enamel than anterior teeth, and many clinicians elect to reduce more aggressively on these contact points. To gain additional space for correction of the anterior teeth, IPR can be performed between the first and second bicuspids and distal to the cuspids with these teeth moved distal.

Rotation Correction Requiring Additional Space

In this case we will reduce the enamel mesial of the distal most tooth not reset, which is usually the first or second bicuspid.
